Microsoft Gatineau screenshots!

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

You’ve been reading about it for some time, Microsoft Gatineau, the new free Web Analytics tool from Microsoft and now the first screenshots have been made public by David Naylor.

Microsoft Gatineau logo

It’s believed that everyone who has seen Gatineau (a city in western Quebec) is still under NDA but that did not force David to post an article complete with screenshots. Gatineau is based on technology from DeepMetrix, an analytics company that was acquired last year. DeepMetrix was based in Gatineau for a number of years. As usual Microsoft works with code names, so Gatineau won’t be the the name the product will have when it is released.

In this screenshot you see Gatineau’s pages report. Personally I think the 3D effect doesn’t add anything to the data. It’s ‘eye-candy’ which does not amke it easier to analyze the data.

Microsoft Gatineau Pages Report

Funnel Reporting development doesn’t seem to be finished yet, with 187% of incomming visits exit the page. Let’s assume that data used for this screenshot wasn’t manipulated yet ;)

 Microsoft Gatineau Funnel Reporting

One of the strenghts and big differences to Google Analytics will be Gatineau’s ability to show you demographic information. Microsoft has a lot of data from their online services like Hotmail, Live, MSN, Spaces and will be able to correlate this with your web traffic. As always, especially with Microsoft, the question is if you can really trust this information.

Let’s just wait until Microsoft Gatineau goes live, I can’t wait to try it.

WebTrends 8.1 is on its way

Friday, July 13th, 2007

A new version of WebTrends will be available soon. It’s believed to be released to OnDemand customers within the next month and available to software customers a little later.

One of the big changes will be the Java applets, which most likely will not be there in the new release. The new release most likely will use Flash to display graphs. Other enhancements are better integration with the Marketing Warehouse and Dynamic Search. We’ll keep you posted!

Second Life Analytics with Tam Tam’s SL-Monitor

Monday, July 9th, 2007

My former Tam Tam colleague Jeroen Hulscher has been working hard on making it possible to see what happens with your properties at Second Life.

Second Life MonitorJeroens’ subject for final was making an application that gives you insight on metrics we know from traditional web analytics tools. These includes Visitors by Day, Visitors per Hour,  Last x Visitors among others but also very Second Life-specific metrics like Visited Places, Used Objects etc.

The application is still in beta but I’m sure that will change as customers’ demand will grow. Take a look at the SL Monitor website for more information.

Visualize web analytics with Visitor Ville

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

Last Friday my attention got distracted by an interesting blog post about visualizing web traffic and comparing Visual Sciences with Visitor Ville. Now I must admit that I already am enthousiastic about what I’ve seen at the partner launch event of Visual Sciences last june so I was very interested about what could be better in visualizing web analytics.

Visitor Ville villageEntering the website of Visitor Ville made me think about an computer game, like Sim City. “Could it be any good” I asked myself. I just had to try the software and actually, it took me only a few minutes to add the tracking code to my website footer and the first results from the application were there….. I could see people comming to my site with busses, helicopters. Walking through the streets from house to house….

Was it the jetleg from flying back from Bangkok to Amsterdam? No, it is real. Visitor Ville gives you insight in your web traffic through a village that has houses or flats (your pages), busses (search engines), helicopters (your VIP visitors), persons (your visitors) etc. Its like Second Life meets Web Analitics.

You really should check this out. You can get a free 7 day trial and in case you want more then 7 days, you can use discount code “OMTRENDS” to get 10% off from their already low monthly plans.

Friday, June 15th, 2007

WebTrends is expanding it’s base of consultants with the purchase of Swedish analytics firm Webcontrol.

With this aquisition WebTrends shows that they are not only into building great software but also see consulting as one of their services. Currently WebTrends works with an large partner network of web (analytics) agencies and related type of companies. This could well change in the future.

Web Analytics Job Market is hotter than ever

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

I found this interesting blog post about the Web Analytics market in the US. John Goad reproduces Anil Brata’s post based on the job aggregator sites indeed.com and simplyhired.com, which list a lot of jobs requiring web analytics knowledge.

Web Analytics jobs

“Both indeed.com and simplyhired.com show an upward trend in open positions. Web Analytics jobs listed on indeed.com are up 16.16% from last month.”

Web Analytics jobs tools experience

 His key findings are:

  1. WebTrends experience is in most demand. Till last month (May 1st snapshot) Omniture was the most demanded tool experience followed by Webtrends.
  2. Webtrends related jobs are significantly up compared to last month.
  3. WebTrends related jobs are 12% higher than Omniture related jobs. Last month Omniture was in lead.
  4. Visual Sciences showed a big jump in open positions, around 140 compared to 1 last month.
  5. Open jobs related to other tools (except Omniture, WebTrends, Visual Sciences) remained about at the same levels as last month.
